Consulting Services – Toward “Pain-Informed Care”
Dr. Lerner has successfully created, directed, expanded, and provided consultative services to numerous integrative pain programs over the course of his career. His extensive experience spans application of pain services in medical, psychiatric, and addiction contexts, and within hospital, outpatient, long-term care, and residential settings.
Dr. Lerner brings his three decades of medical, administrative, and program development experience to his work as consultant to programs, facilities and institutions seeking to develop or expand effective integrative pain services.
The current focus of Dr. Lerner’s consulting work is with behavioral health and addiction programs and facilities wishing to better support individuals with pain in the context of addiction, trauma or mood disorders. His Complicated Pain Recovery™ model is ideally suited to this.
Dr. Lerner has coined the phrase “pain-informed care”, to reflect his vision of mental health and addiction professionals developing a deeper understanding of the nature of un-resolving and debilitating pain and applying effective strategies to resolve the entanglement of physical, psychological, biochemical, and attitudinal factors which inhibit one’s natural potential for healing and well-being.
Dr. Lerner is delighted to provide consultation and support to behavioral health and substance use programs and facilities in the areas of:

Professional trainings
Coach Training Workshops
Dr. Lerner has developed a two day training program for professionals, offering 10-12 continuing education credits.
Individuals who complete the training are designated “Certified Complicated Pain Recovery(TM) Coach” and will have a solid basic knowledge and skill set to provide education and coaching to those struggling with complicated pain.
Previous trainings have included psychologists, psychotherapists, addiction counselors, life coaches, physical therapists, personal trainers, body workers, physicians and nurses. Please stay tuned to this website for postings of the next scheduled workshop.
Lectures and Presentations
Dr. Lerner has extensively lectured and presented throughout the country about pain recovery, complicated pain, pain and addiction, and pain in the context of trauma and mood disorders. He is available for conferences, grand rounds, and other events.
